The Founder

A Life Given To The Loom

Kerala Weaves carries forward the name of Somasundaram Sons, founded by Late Shri S. Somasundaram in Balaramapuram — the small Kerala town that has clothed generations in kasavu for over two centuries. Balaramapuram's handloom tradition traces back to the patronage of the erstwhile Travancore royal family, whose trust in the town's weavers gave rise to the pure, gold-bordered cotton that Kerala is known for around the world today.

Late Shri S. Somasundaram built his life's work on a simple principle: the weaver should never be an afterthought. Long before "direct from source" was a marketing phrase, this family was sitting with weavers in their homes, understanding their looms, and making sure every thread of credit — and income — reached the hands that wove it.

That same principle guides Kerala Weaves today, as the family's next generation carries the craft online — connecting Balaramapuram's weavers directly with saree and mundu lovers across India and the world.

Kerala Weaves Today

Bringing Balaramapuram To The World

Kerala Weaves takes this legacy online — so anyone, anywhere, can own a genuine piece of Balaramapuram's handloom heritage, direct from the weaver.

How It's Made

From Yarn To Your Hands

Every Kerala Weaves piece passes through the same patient, entirely handmade process that Balaramapuram has practised for generations.

Yarn Selection

Fine, pure cotton yarn is chosen and prepared, along with genuine zari for the border work.

Warping & Sizing

Threads are carefully warped and starched by hand, readying them for the loom.

Handweaving

Skilled weavers work the pit loom thread by thread — a single saree can take days to complete.

Border & Finishing

The signature kasavu zari border is woven in, then each piece is finished, checked and folded by hand.
